Photographer Sally Gall Lecture
Coalition of Photographic Arts to Host Internationally Renowned
Photographer Sally Gall
Wisconsin's fastest growing arts organization, the Coalition of
Photographic Arts (CoPA) is proud to present "An Evening with Sally
Gall" October 24, 2005 at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design
(273 E. Erie St., in Milwaukee's historic Third Ward). This
exciting lecture is open to the public and begins at 7pm, followed
by a question & answer period and book signing. Please join us as
we welcome this international talent to Milwaukee.
Gall is an award winning artist who has been taking photographs for
over 25 years. Her work is on display in museum collections around
the world. She is well known for her body of work titled
Subterranea. With only a flashlight and her camera, she has captured
the natural underworld in a manner that that is not only provocative
and startling but also exceptionally beautiful. Now Gall is
embarking in a new direction. Come listen to her lecture, and be one
of the first to see her new body of work.
The Coalition of Photographic Arts (CoPA) is designed to develop
appreciation, promote growth, and support the creation of fine art
photography in the Greater Milwaukee region. CoPA's goal is to
cultivate awareness of contemporary photography through educational
programs, lectures, panel discussions, and exhibitions. The
organization aims to be the primary resource for fine art
photography information in the Milwaukee area. CoPA's website
features information about general photography news and events,
profiles of member photographers, a listing of photography exhibits
currently on display, and resources for members. Connections within
the photographic community are fostered through monthly member
meetings and yearly exhibitions. Members include artists, students,
professionals, amateurs, enthusiasts, and collectors.
For more information about Sally Gall or CoPA please visit our
website at www.copamilwaukee.com.

David Nevala

Everyone should check out these sites. This is one of the photographers that I worked with over the summer. His passion is portrait photography, but he has also become well-known for architectural and commercial photography. Some of his photos would have actually been great inspiration for the Tableau project.

Narrative Methodology
Narrative Methodology
There are ten weeks left of school. For the rest of the semester you will work on a Narrative Methodology that fits your sensibilities as a photographer. You will work on creating a body of work. Make digital contact sheets: I want at least 75 images per week. 100 is even better. That’s not that many - think of it as three rolls of film. We will have periodic work in progress critiques. These crits will include the contact sheets and five work prints. The way you choose to lay out your contacts is up to you and is part of your methodology.
From Wikipedia:
Methodology is defined as (1) "a body of methods, rules, and postulates employed by a discipline", (2) "a particular procedure or set of procedures", or (3) "the analysis of the principles or procedures of inquiry in a particular field"[1]. The common idea here is the collection, the comparative study, and the critique of the individual methods that are used in a given discipline or field of inquiry.
In other words, your methodology is the way you work, the way you organize your images, the way you lay out your contact sheets.
Wednesday we will look at several short videos of photographers at work and describing their own methodologies.
Wednesday, October 11 is a lecture day.
First work in progress critique: October 18th.
